Nothing Extra™
The beauty of this approach is that is efficient at its very core. Nothing Extra™ means no extra training, reports, or managing as every individual grows in skill and ability.

You want an organization that consistently produces superior results. Grow and develop your people so they can handle the challenge and complexity required to deliver those results. You want to grow and develop your people so that they become bigger, more mature, and more free versions of themselves.
We use the complexity faced by your organization to design a curriculum that sets them free. The answer to each question is found in the day to day work. Nothing extra is required: no training programs, no reporting on progress, no separate management process. Just run your organization so that the extremely high standards that you want for the results are the exact conditions required for an ideal development environment. |
Nothing Extra™ is a method of attending to daily work and using our self-mastery and our business capabilities to note the places where we are “in over our heads” while engaging in work. The concept behind Nothing Extra™ is twofold. Work naturally has challenges we do not need to attend learning programs to learn, if we have an organization with the learning infrastructures in place to support workplace learning. Every role, activity and task in the company becomes what Robert Kegan, in his book In Over Our Heads, calls “curriculum.”
Each work task and role in the organization can be identified for the level of complexity to perform it. The Nothing Extra™ Approach breaks down the ability required to engage in a task as it is situated in daily work. Thinking about the natural curriculum in managing and leading a workforce, various tasks can be broken down into a series of learning steps, each more complex than the next. These 4 learning steps we call Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced and Master. With any job or task that constitutes daily value adding work, a natural ladder of progression can be developed in the natural work environment.
Nothing Extra™ also entails delivering on the company’s rights and responsibilities. To fulfill these accountabilities and to enact these rights every community member’s job entails learning and teaching. In the correct balance a person who is at a higher level of mastery than someone else teaches. On other roles and tasks where they are Beginners that same person needs to engage in learning.
The Nothing Extra™ approach relies on building a learning infrastructure that “scaffolds development.” Scaffolding is the learning infrastructure that schedules daily work for operational and developmental integration. Scaffolding development is a natural requirement in process intense manufacturing and service environments. It entails taking a step back from only viewing work cost and productivity to see the cost and flow of work and capacity-building simultaneously. While scaffolding for on-the-job learning has always been a tacit component of workforce effectiveness, by looking at this same requirement through the lens of learning and development, a Deliberately Developmental company takes this to a higher order of complexity, i.e., development.
